The plate on this Contour is real brass, which is a combination of copper and zinc. Brass does not rust, but it can tarnish. This is completely normal with brass when exposed to oxygen, and it can be accelerated by the natural oils in our skin. Some people love the tarnished look on the brass, but if you would like to lessen or remove the tarnish, follow the steps below to clean your Brass Contour.
Vinegar/Salt Solution:
How to Clean the Brass Contour:
Step One:
Use your T6 torx tool to disassemble your Contour completely. We recommend placing the screws and components into a small container or baggie so they do not get lost during this process.
It is very important that you clean only the brass frame using this method. Using this method on the leather or other metal components of the wallet may cause damage.
Step Two:
Fill the bowl with enough vinegar to submerge the brass frame. You can add some salt into the bowl to help accelerate the cleaning process. Put only the brass frame into the bowl.
Step Three:
Soak the brass frame for about 30-60 minutes.
If you used salt, it will probably be closer to 30 minutes. If you did not use salt, it could take up to 60 minutes or more depending on the severity of the tarnish.
Step Four:
Remove the brass frame from vinegar and rinse it with warm soapy water. We recommend using a mild dish soap for this.
Use your microfiber cloth to wipe the frame down. If you have a soft toothbrush, you can use that to get into the smaller spots. Do not use any sort of abrasive scrubbing device as this could scratch or damage your frame.
After you are done scrubbing, rinse your frame thoroughly using just water. It is very important to make sure it is completely rinsed, you do not want any residual salt or vinegar to remain on the frame as this could damage the other components later on.
Step Five:
Dry the frame completely using your microfiber cloth or a soft towel. Let it air dry for a bit as well to ensure all the holes are completely dry before reassembling.
Step Six:
Now that your frame is completely dry, you can reassemble the Contour using your T6 tool again.
Repeat this process as necessary.
Further information:
For all cleaning methods, you will want to disassemble the wallet and clean just the brass frame only. None of these methods may restore the tarnish completely to the brand-new shine, but it is the tarnished look of the brass that makes your brass Contour unique and tells its story.
